MOUTH FULL OF BEES a mouth full of bees a pocket full of teeth you stand there and find you’re a stump your heads all a flutter it’s crammed and it’s cluttered suddenly you find you’re a stump you’re smart and articulate but you’re not right no you’re not right no you’re not right hiding behind the clouds the stars shine bright the stars shine bright the stars shine bright he say’s darling i guess my love it’s obscure it dances and hides from the light so don’t look too close don’t hold too tight the beast it skitters off in the night the beast it skitters off in the night you’re smart and articulate but you’re not right hiding behind the clouds the stars shine bright the bump and the grind the whispering pines they’ll tell us all we need to know we may feel some panic as our time draws near and suddenly we find we’re just stumps as suddenly we find we’re just stumps we’re smart and articulate but we’re not right no we’re not right hiding behind the clouds the stars shine bright the stars shine bright

GRAVITY AND FRICTION a late september night south of provo i pull in at diamond creek to sleep a couple hours before driving north cold on the ground und billions of stars i’m overwhelmed by the possibilities life offers the hope the heartache the beginnings the middles the ends i think of you under a blanket of stars the sky it’s a cathedral it’s a chorus of beating hearts the milky way spread thick like tapioca i dream of you under a blanket of stars don’t be amused by misery and heartache god knows for sure you’ll get your fair share the hard knocks and kicks and hits that life throws you they’ll knock you down go find yourself go find yourself your blanket of stars expect to be affected by gravity and friction though sometimes you’ll find the rules won’t apply you won’t be immune to weather or heartbreak go find yourself go find yourself your blanket of stars

GIACOMO’S ASSISTANT giacomo’s assistant she kept them wrapped right around her finger pulling strings the way no other girl could do she’ll read you her scars like she’s reading dostoevsky you try to keep the names straight but still you can’t let go giacomo’s assistant she loved francisco’s paintings she called him little priest for the way he held his hands throwing rocks out in the courtyard and of course one hit his forehead and it bled so much the other kids were sure that he was dead and all the world it’s laid out there right before her she can see it but she can’t reach out and touch the things she loves and nothing is real they’re just stories we keep repeating repeating over and over until they all come true and all the world it’s laid out there right before her she can see it but she can’t reach out and touch the things she loves

about

KING ROPES Bozeman, montana

When Dave Hollier spins records at a party, he plays stuff that’s all over the map. The Meters, The Knife, Boston, Bowie, Buck Owens. It could go very wrong. But it doesn’t. Finding the thread that leads from The Cars to The Beastie Boys to Van Halen to Prayers, he tells a long, beautiful, cross-cultural, multi-generational story. Hollier’s band King Ropes is doing much the same thing. ... more
